The First Deacons and Today

by Jordan Arnold on February 23, 2025

In the early days of the Jerusalem Church, the twelve apostles appointed seven men
to a specific pastoral and practical task: ensuring the equitable distribution of resources to Hellenistic Jewish widows (Acts 6:1-6). Rather than micromanaging, the apostles entrusted these deacons with the charge to serve and solve the problem among themselves—freeing the apostles to focus on prayer and the ministry of the Word. The result? “Theword of God continued to spread, and the number of the disciples in Jerusalem increased rapidly” (Acts 6:7).

To our newly appointed deacons, your charge is much the same. The elders are
calling on you to serve, to strengthen the unity of our body, and to help bridge the divide
between our Spanish- and English-speaking members. Beyond that, there are significant
capital needs that require thoughtful leadership and action today and over the coming
years. The parking lot needs major repairs, and we must address security concerns.
Accessibility improvements, such as an elevator, are necessary to welcome all members
and visitors. The restrooms require renovation, and the auditorium could be made more
inviting.

But remember: the role of deacons is not just to manage projects—it is to discern
priorities and develop plans of action that help the church thrive in both service and unity.
The shepherds have been appointed to spiritually lead; you have been empowered by the
Holy Spirit to serve.

Brother deacons, COCFC is counting on your leadership. Love Christ’s bride, step
forward in faith, prayerfully consider her needs, be among the flock and bring unified
proposals to the shepherds on behalf of the congregation. Just as in Acts, when deacons
fulfill their ministry, the church grows. The Lord bless you in this vital work!

Maranatha,

Jordy
